Welcome to July! We are delighted to kick off summer with our latest issue of Genii.

This month, we have an interesting range of theatrical experience to explore. Richard Wiseman starts us off by revealing treasures from a recently discovered scrapbook that contains the journey of Castle Dracula—a full evening show produced by the godfather of Bizarre Magick, Charles Cameron. It’s a delightful journey back in time, with behind-the-scenes access on how this immensely popular show was created and staged in the late ‘80s.
With a turn of the page, we jump 40 years to the present, and hop into a quirky, underground world of deception, crafted by New York City magician Hayden Childress. Far and away from mainstream magic, Childress’ show, Urban Illusions, tackles modern-day illusions colliding with everyday reality. What does that even look like? Don’t worry: Carl Mercurio’s got you. Carl gives us a look inside Childress’ wild and sometimes disorienting world.
And that’s just a slice of what we’ve got lined up for you this month. Editors have been busy. From the magic department, there’s an international collection of magic tricks—including a beautifully constructed Rising Card routine, and a mind-melting Coins Through Table refinement. Elsewhere in Genii, there are all kinds of explorations: of play; of “The Magician’s Choice” (it’s not quite what you think); on how to express what you love about magic; and a look at how to make a walkaround gig feel more than just walking around!
