Many years ago, ALADIN—then still the newsletter of Magic Club Vienna—published an intriguing idea by Harry Reno: an invisible handkerchief that ultimately materializes inside an invisible matchbox. The premise immediately appealed to Magic Christian. It was one of those rare ideas too good to lose, so he filed it away for future use. Years later, it found its way into one of his political cabaret-style programs, where it became a perfect vehicle for his satirical humor, political asides, and highly interactive spectator management. For his presentation, Christian frames the routine with a script inspired by The Emperor’s New Clothes, creating abundant opportunities for situational comedy while also giving the spectator a natural reason to imagine the color of the invisible silk.
The routine quickly became a favorite with audiences and has remained in his professional repertoire ever since. It was first published in his German lecture notes The Magic of Christian 3 (ca. 1982).
