The Bet That Changed Everything

Effect

The magician explains how they began to make a good living as a result of the bets they made. To illustrate that point, they propose the following challenge: They take out a small glass bowl as well as a shuffled deck of cards, and remove the two red tens, which they set aside face up. They shuffle the deck again and ask a first spectator to touch a card, for example the Queen of Clubs, which they clearly place between the red tens, all face up.

They shuffle the deck again and have a second spectator fairly choose a card; they have it signed to authenticate it (in this example it is the Four of Spades). Before losing this signed card, they have a third spectator touch one last “mystery card,” which is “imprisoned” under the bowl. The second spectator’s card, the Four of Spades, is lost in the deck.

While carrying out these actions, the magician summarizes everything that has happened and introduces the idea of the following bet: They bet that they are capable of replacing the card sandwiched between the red tens (the Queen of Clubs) with the chosen (signed) card, while simultaneously causing the Queen of Clubs to travel under the bowl.

Understanding the impossibility of the bet, the spectator does not hesitate to make a big wager. And yet, in a fraction of a second (and in full view), the spectator’s signed card, the Four of Spades, appears between the red tens, and the Queen of Clubs arrives under the bowl.

Finally, they show that except for the card under the bowl, there were only Queens of Clubs in the deck.
