Some people believe destiny is written in stone, but wonder why not on paper? They place a single card on the table as a prediction.
The magician then gives a spectator a deck of cards and invites them to cut off a portion and turn it face up on top of the remaining cards. The spectator is told to “cut deeper” and repeat the process. There are now several cards face up on top of the deck. The magician takes back the deck and spreads through the face-up cards until reaching the first face-down card. This face-down card will serve as the spectator’s selection (an Eight of Hearts in this example) and is placed face down on the table without revealing its face.
The magician reminds the spectator about the prediction card, which has been on the table since the beginning, and asks if they would find it remarkable if it were its mate.
When the prediction is turned over, it reveals a completely different card (the King of Spades). After a brief pause at this apparent failure, the magician clarifies that they never said this card would be the Eight of Hearts, but rather its mate. They then flip over the selected card, revealing that it has transformed into the mate of the prediction (the King of Clubs).
Finally, the magician comments that the audience is probably wondering what happened to the Eight of Hearts. The performer spreads the deck to reveal that it is face up within the spread, saying that it went searching for its mate. The face-up card is removed along with the one next to it, revealing that they are indeed side by side—the Eight of Hearts and the Eight of Diamonds.
