Effect
The magician offers to perform an effect based entirely on their sense of touch and not sleight of hand. A card is freely chosen by a spectator, committed to memory and returned to the deck. To make sleight of hand impossible, the magician places their left hand in their jacket pocket and the pack in the opposite right jacket pocket. The spectator is asked to reveal the name of their card. The magician then reaches into the pocket containing the deck and produces from it a playing card that does not match the spectator’s selection. The performer tries and fails again to produce the correct card. Just as all seems lost, the magician offers to try something else. They return the deck to the spectator and ask them to remove their card. The spectator discovers, however, that their card is missing. At that moment, the performer reminds the spectator that “there is no substitute for sleight of hand” and slowly withdraws their left hand from their pocket bringing with it the spectator’s card.
