Cyril Takayama rediscovers magic
This month in Genii, we are reacquainted with Cyril Takayama, one of magic’s biggest television and touring stars. There’s no escaping him
October is Harry’s month as much as it is magic’s. The centenary marking the death of the Great One has been well reported this year… but here’s a new one. His great-nephew George Hardeen shines a light on a new take on his famous uncle’s untimely death at the age of 52. Hardeen introduces us to Dr. Larrian Gillespie—a former surgeon turned writer who has conducted her own investigation into the death of Harry Houdini through the lens of a medical forensic investigator. Gillespie is on a crusade to clear the name of the shy and awkward McGill University student, J. Gordon Whitehead, who (in)famously threw the so-called fatal punch to Houdini’s stomach that supposedly brought on his death 10 days later. While Whitehead was never charged with any crime, he has always been seen as the bad guy in the strange episode. But Gillespie doesn’t buy it.
