The Elephant Crusher: The Big Difference Made by Small Details

Once again with this column, I implore you to stop reading for a moment to watch a short video I made so you can experience the Elephant Crusher illusion before I deconstruct it.

In the video, a toy Lego elephant is placed behind a screen. Instantly the screen is pulled apart in two sections. As the interleaved slats separate, the elephant is first crushed and then vanishes.

The inspiration for this comes from two sparks.

Firstly, I’ve been playing with the visual effect of objects being pulled apart or crushed as part of the vanishing act. In my December 2025 column, The Nauseous Limit, I shared another elephant vanish within a net structure that fits this theme.
