Is magic an art? In 1993, the question was answered once and for all. London’s Magic Circle was in the process of raising funds for a new headquarters when they received the news that they had been awarded a £250,000 grant from the Foundation for Sport and the Arts. As part of the application, alongside the hard work of innumerable Circle members and spearheaded by David Berglas and Michael Bailey, John Fisher (pictured below) produced a document arguing for the status of magic as an art. The Circle’s subsequent success suggests that Fisher’s argument was accepted, and Genii readers will no doubt be delighted to know that further exploration of the question is unnecessary. (Indeed, any work on the matter in the last 33 years was redundant.)
