A new video game is headed to XBOX called Magicians: The Devil’s Deal, and this experience, for those aged 17 and above, has the player imbued with “stage magic-inspired powers.”
Here’s the official description, which lays it all out:
In Magicians, you’ll control Jacob Menteuro, a stage magician from 1890s England. Once a member of an elite society called the Magic Ring, Jacob was betrayed and abandoned by his colleagues.
Now, he finds an unlikely ally—The Devil—who throws Jacob headfirst into the endless caverns of Theatreland, a hellish underground version of London where stage magic has become disastrously real.
I think we’ve all (metaphorically, at least) been trapped in the caverns of Theatreland at some point in our lives, so the game’s setup is relatable.
Magicians comes from Uppercut Games and is a single-player campaign, where you, as Jacob, use “Tricks” like the power of levitation to solve problems and defend yourself. The goal, however, is to defeat the other Masters of the Magic Ring; magicians who Jacob thought were his friends… until they sacrificed him to the Devil to gain more power for themselves. Each Master Magician has a realm where they practice their own “special branch of stage magic” (what those branches are, alas, is unclear); their magic, however, is running amok, creating all sorts of challenges for Jacob. His former mentor—Oliver Burke, the Master of Mentalism—is also after him, making things tough all around for the poor magician.
Magicians: The Devil’s Deal is set to come out sometime in 2027 across different platforms, but XBOX/Uppercut Games released a trailer to give us a feel for what the play will be like. And remember, as the marketing copy for the game states, “Magic is more than a spectacle. It is power.”
