Magic is so hot right now that it’s taking over several U.S. arts-and-crafts stores. I’m talking about Michaels, the chain where you can purchase seasonal decor, picture frames, yarn, fake flowers, and pretty much anything and everything you’d need to make the arts and/or crafts project of your dreams.
Why are we talking about Michaels in Genii? In addition to being a place to purchase items for your DIY effects, the stores released a Bound by Magic collection in June that features items perfect for your magic room and/or show-on-the-road.

Want a bookshelf riffing on the Mis-Made Girl illusion? A cake plate with Alexander’s face emblazoned on it? How about a vertical banner showcasing Kellar or Houdini, or a shadow box featuring Thurston? Want to add faux books to your collection that are really boxes with titles like Magician’s Trick and Locks and Illusions on their fake spines? If so, Michaels has got you. (The store also has you covered if you want any tarot-inspired decor or a pillow with the astrological sign of your choice.)
Thoughts on Michaels’ magical decor may vary, but I can’t help but get a tickle of enjoyment from a sign that says “Amazing Illusions Never Before Seen” alongside a pair of flickering hands shooting lightning bolts out their fingers. But that’s just me.
At the time this column went to print, the collection was only in stores but not online. Odds are good, however, that if you search for “Michaels Bound by Magic,” the items will now be up on the website and available for your purchasing pleasure.
