Back in the ‘90s, before he became a magician, Zabrecky was the frontman for the band Possum Dixon. He had hung up his musician shoes for decades, but has recently caught the music bug again. The focus of his lyrics, however, has changed.
“Where I used to write about girls I was dating and running around low-rent areas in LA, New York, and Europe, my mind is now on magic,” he told THE EYE. The results are a 2022 recording called “SEANCE! With Zabrecky” and, most recently, the song “Our Magic,” a tune Zabrecky calls “a little piece of provocative art” that honors a dozen or so magicians including Houdini, Kuda Bux, Max Maven, the Larsens, and Chung Ling Soo.
In The Red Records is putting out a seven inch of “Our Magic,” and there’s also a music video for the song, created with the help of AI by David B. Kelley. “I’m mostly against visual AI because the look is displeasing to me,” Zabrecky said, “but [Kelley] seemed to have control of it, and made all these photos come to life and sing the lyrics along with me, and make Max Maven play the bass, and Irene Larsen dance in provocative undergarments… that came out and I was on the edge of my seat cracking up. And I was like, ‘If I like it, it’s likely other people will like it,’ and so far they have.”
