The Oscar-nominated documentarian Benjamin Ree’s next project is The Greatest Illusion, which focuses on Norwegian magician and illusionist Alexx Alexxander.
Alexx lost some of his memories after a traumatic experience, and processes the associated emotions in his act. Ree hopes to portray Alexx’s inner life and “show how trauma affects memories.” Part of that involves chronicling how Alexx’s memories change, and also includes the magician in conversation with a therapist rather than with Ree. Alexx’s family, including his siblings, are also part of the documentary.

“I strongly believe in the power of hope. But it’s not the Disney kind of hope; it’s grittier and more complex. We need it these days,” the director told Variety. “Magic and illusions have been extremely important for Alexx. When life was at its roughest, he would go up onstage and perform. That’s what fascinates me: his ability to do personal magic and connect it to his own story.”

Ree started working with Alexx when the magician was almost bankrupt. Alexx is in a better spot now, and also plans to perform in conjunction with screenings of the documentary.
The Greatest Illusion was just recognized by the Norwegian International Film Festival Haugesund with the Storyline Production Award—a new honor that highlights a project with an international appeal. The documentary is set to premiere in 2027.
