MATT: Some of my favorite artists make you come to them. Bob Dylan makes you. He doesn’t do any crowd work, he barely talks and usually doesn’t introduce the band. Sometimes I feel that a lot of magicians are begging you, “Here’s an applause cue. It’s time to clap.” I can’t think of the last time I really enjoyed watching that.
ALEX: I wonder if there’s a mindset that comes from a theatrical background as opposed to a close-up magic background. Do you think it’s because you perform close-up magic?
MATT: I think we all recoil from dishonesty. We recoil when we feel like someone’s saying something canned or doing something they don’t really believe. There are nights when I’m on stage and I feel like I’m in a different mood, and I’m moving differently. I’m trying to be honest about where I’m at and how I’m feeling, so it doesn’t feel fake. Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe I’m being like an annoying method actor. But I like to be honest with what I’m feeling and to use the words differently. The words being our actions on stage. Do you change depending on what room you’re in?
