In just one hour Kyle and Blake attempted to come up with a new magic trick. The following is an excerpt from their conversation, and a description of one of their ideas.
Blake Vogt How’s it going?
Kyle Marlett I’m in the middle of the ocean on a cruise ship. Two shows yesterday for 3,000 people, two shows tonight. I’ve been on ships for the last 15 years, and it’s hard to create magic when you’re on the road. I try to write material, but then I’m never home to actually build the stuff, or I’m getting supplies sent to my apartment, and six months later when I see the stuff I don’t know what it is for.
BV Then you’re in luck because I am in my office, so if there’s any supply that you think we might need in the next hour I can probably reach out of frame and grab it.
KM That’s how we normally work. I have an idea, and by the time I get to the table Blake’s already built it.
BV How are the shows?
KM When you come and see my show it’s not about the magic. The best compliment I can get when people see my show is when they say: “I could watch you talk for 45 minutes and not do magic.” It’s not about the magic. It’s about the human connection. It’s about the conversation. It’s about just existing and being together. A lot of times magicians can fall into the idea that it’s a magic show first. Being on cruise ships, I hear people all the time going: “Oh, I saw a magician….” I ask: “What was their name?” and they don’t know. They remember that a bowling ball appeared from a pad but they don’t remember the performer. I don’t want people to remember the magic, I want people to remember me. Then they’re gonna follow me, they’re gonna buy tickets to my show, and that’s the more important thing.
