Britain’s hypnotism act of 1952, on paper, places strict rules on when a hypnotist can use their skills for entertainment.

In England, Scotland, and Wales, stage hypnosis can only happen after the performer files a permit, which is then approved (or not) by the local council or government. To perform without such approval is a criminal offense.

For decades, the English town of Bolton took it one step further: The council simply refused to consider any permits, effectively banning hypnotists from its borders.

But Bolton changed its tune in 2024 and allowed the first hypnotist act to perform there in over 40 years. This summer, Colin Adamson has also received approval from the town and will perform at the Little Lever Conservative Club on June 21, and at the Hollywood Road Sports and Social Club, BL1, on August 2, 2025.

“I believe in safe and fun entertainment,” Colin states on his website. “I follow the guidelines of the 1952 Hypnotism Act of Great Britain, and use it as a code of ethics when performing internationally.”
