Since 1936 Genii has shared the work of countless experts exploring every imaginable facet of magic. The Genii editorial team believes that this uniquely human expertise is fundamental to what this magazine is, that the process of creating print and digital media has value beyond the resultant product, and that generative AI is built on the exploitation of the creative work of people like those in our community of readers, writers, photographers, and artists. For these reasons Genii will not generally publish material generated by AI.
There are a few limited exceptions:
- If a piece requires the use of generative AI (for example if it is exploring the ability of AI to create a magic trick) this will be agreed by the editors ahead of commission and the output of the AI will be clearly marked as such and will never be passed off as human work.
- AI can be used as a research tool (e.g., to synthesize a large data set), but information it provides will not be accepted without human interrogation.
- AI can be used to help with text processing such as translation. The output of the AI will be reviewed editorially by a human.
- AI can be used to help with minor edits to images, for example creating cutouts, color correction, or using content-aware fill to remove blemishes from photographs.
If you have any questions or comments on the approach to AI that Genii is taking you can contact the editorial team at editors@geniimagazine.com. Given the rapid pace of technological development we assume this will be an evolving policy. Any substantive changes will be made clear to Genii readers in print and online.
