When one is involved in magic for an extended length of time, there can come a moment of complacency or, dare I say, jadedness watching another magician. When the performer launches into the umpteenth version of Ambitious Card or Linking Rings, it becomes too easy to observe the effect with dreary, murky eyes. It’s only when we encounter a performer who breathes new life into what we may label as “tired” effects that the thaumaturgic Visine is gently dropped into our eyes, clearing away that murkiness and allowing us to appreciate those tricks or routines with newfound clarity. This was demonstrated recently at The Magic Castle during a week featuring a lineup of Taiwanese performers.
