The Magic Castle enjoys a certain level of mystique when it comes to its public image. I was reminded of this one evening when I was walking down Orange Drive toward the club. Preparations for the Hollywood Christmas Parade were taking place just down the street on Hollywood Boulevard, further entangling drivers’ attempts to reach their destinations on top of the usual traffic mess. Waiting on the corner to cross Franklin Avenue and make my way up the hill to the club, a traffic guard asked where I was headed. (I suspect my style of dress had something to do with that. One doesn’t often see someone dressed in a full suit and tie on that particular street corner unless that someone is about to visit The Magic Castle.) When I motioned toward The Castle in response to his question, he stared at me with a look of disbelief on his face.
