The $100 Challenge

A young magician from San Diego gives his thoughts and insights on some new magic

Kai McCullen
The $100 Challenge

We gave $100 to magician Kai McCullen of Southern California, and asked him to buy any current trick or tricks that might suit his current repertoire or his current plans for magic.

Kai is 12 years old, and has been performing magic for about three years.

His current interest is cards. He’s organized his current shows around card magic, but he’s interested in performing different kinds of magic. Right now, he performs street magic—based on close-up effects—and he also gets jobs doing walk-around magic, and he performs at restaurants.

Recently he attended his first MAGIC Live convention, and was included in Genii’s coverage in the October 2025 issue. He financed his own trip to Las Vegas through his shows.

Kai says that he’s especially interested in tricks that feel “artistic.” He defines those as tricks that are particularly visual and might work well in a full routine, rather than just individual moments. He’s also performing some mentalism, which seems interesting to his audiences.

Because of his interest in visual effects, Kai selected Silhouette by Tobias Dostal ($75), and The Weapons Gaff Deck by Eric Ross ($28), which both provide strong visual moments.
