Tina Lenert appeared as the eponymous star of The Mascot Moth, a recreation of one of Devant’s most successful plays and illusions, in 1999 at the Los Angeles Conference on Magic History. In the play, the legendary moth—in human form— suddenly disappears from the leading man’s grasp, causing his luck to change and his future to be secure. The disappearing person illusion inspires gasps. The effect was successful in the hands of Devant (and in recreations by Doug and Debby Henning, Siegfried & Roy, Patrick Albanese and Tina Lenert at the Conference), but is a delicate dance of mechanical apparatus and performance. J.N. Maskelyne, Devant’s partner, told him that it was the “trickiest trick” he had ever seen.
