Kevin and Cindy Spencer have made inroads in magic. Their award-winning illusion act was one of the first to break into performing arts centers, helping to make it the largest touring theatrical illusion show in the country after David Copperfield set up residency in Las Vegas.
For over 25 years, the two toured the globe. But early on, they also wanted to give back. In the 1980s, they were initially part of Copperfield’s Project Magic, a nonprofit focused on using magic as a form of therapy for those with disabilities. With Copperfield’s blessing, however, they soon branched off and started their own program, which they originally called Healing of Magic.
Then, in 1990, Kevin’s therapy work became personal. He was in a serious automobile accident that left him with traumatic brain injury and damage to his lower spinal cord. He was in rehab for almost a year to regain his mobility.
“All of a sudden, therapy became very real to me,” he told Genii. “It wasn’t just something that I was working with other patients to do… and I think that is much of the motivation that drives what we do today, because I recognize the frustrations that people with disabilities feel every single day of their lives.”
